A PRACTICAL TRIP SHORTLIST

Hot springs near Portland

From Portland, start by choosing a corridor and checking access. Bagby and Breitenbush offer very different visits; the McKenzie River options belong in a separate, more ambitious trip plan.

First decision: bathhouse or reserved retreat?

Bagby requires a trail approach and has a reported USFS wildfire closure. Breitenbush sells reserved day-use access. Do not treat these as interchangeable fallback stops: check the land-manager notice and the reservation calendar before leaving Portland.

A separate plan for the McKenzie River

Terwilliger and Belknap give you a natural-pool versus developed-pool comparison in the McKenzie corridor. Terwilliger’s fee has a two-hour limit; Belknap’s walk-in use has a one-hour limit, a minimum age and holiday exclusions. Their rules can matter more than which pin appears closest.

Route planning

This is a curated trip shortlist, not a list of places inside Portland or a ranked driving-distance result. Check your actual route, daylight and mountain-road conditions. Leave time for the approach, check-in and the return trip; no live travel times are available here.

ODOT TripCheck covers state-highway conditions. Check the relevant forest, refuge or operator for the final access road. No driving times, opening guarantees or live pool temperatures are inferred from map coordinates.
